Another ChamberSoft creation that pushes its limits to the extreme and does it well.
Just finished my session with it, and sitting on it all, but it's clear when they want to tell a story, the visuals, the writing, the audio, it's all top notch. The climatic scene near the end made me feel uncomfortable and a bit short of breath, but that's what I enjoyed about it, too.
The way both Nadja and Marie are both victims of neglect, not knowing what's right, born in a world that's made to fail them. Even when solutions are available and are barred from them (like how nadja couldn't get accommodation for her autism due to prideful parents), things in life just, don't make it fucking fair.
i played this yesterday morning and im going to be chewing on it a lot. especially nadja's experiences early diagnosed experiences as an autistic girl. her mom refusing to acknowledge the diagnosis, down to the "my child is normal! she's not failing in school" rhetoric
but also your depictions of the us's agonizing descent into fascism, and how it directly or indirectly haunts people like nadja and marie — whether literally (the nazi chernobog cult's sacrifice haunting them both) or metaphorically (marie's disconnect with the world around her as she
and her mental/behavioral struggles are dismissed as 'white trash' behavior — and nadja's own struggles with an ignorant foster care system and marie's abuse towards her) the cherry on top of it all is seeing how its set in 2016, right before the presidential elections. great stuff.
i think im gonna have to chew on this one in my head for a while.
another chamberlillium banger, the writing and fleshing out of the environment and the characters themselves really do alot to make it all feel drawn out of real life. i feel most readers may find some part of themself reflected in either nadja or marie, parts they may already know, and others repressed to the fringes of the mind.
i find myself sort of endlessly pouring over the art, sort of a crossover of wurtzian impressionist painting styles and the character work of jim benton.
the music is wonderful as well, complimenting the warm and hopeless feeling rural locale the characters are trapped in, and also great at building tension when things start to fall apart. I also have to shout out some of the sound effects work. nadja's realistic coughing was honestly crazy. -"She needs a friend. You could be like sisters."-
Hit very close to home scarily, it felt very indulgent to read cause so many topics covered/shown in the game felt like part of my own life. The writing reminds me a lot of Stephen Graham Jone's work (although I'm still a beginner in reading his books).
